First Half Chunk of Stiff

"It's the reason most of us prefer a pork chop to a slice of whole suckling pig. It's the reason we say "pork" and "beef" instead of "pig" and "cow." Weird to say, but I have never thought of it this way. I would never eat a pig or cow that has been cooked infront of me yet I will eat sausage and hamburgers. After reading this particular part in Stiff it made me wonder, if we have meat just like cows and pigs, why aren't we getting ate? That is disgusting to think about. I could not work on dead body parts as if they were never a part of a human body. Reading this section, do you believe humans should be eating animals as compared to animals eating humans?

  1. Reading this section truly made me want to become a vegetarian. Its so true what she pointed out, if my mom told me to go get some pig insetead of saying go get a slice of bacon I would reconsider eating at all. Maybe thats why I hate pigs feet. Humans get all crazy when one of their kind is eaten by an animal so when you make the comparison, animals are being quite genourous. It is definatley disgusting to think about a human eating another human or an animal eating one. Its survival of the fittest and the dominate race won, I just hate that we are being so arrogant about it to the other animals.

  2. To me, it's the way of life and Kendrea is right about it being the survival of the fittest. While it sounds crazy and I would hate to be eaten by an animal, when an animal eats a human it was the dominant one at the time. I think calling a pig while we're eating it would just throw everything off and make us not want to eat it because of the visuals it would create in our minds. Also, eating the animal in its original form seems disgusting to me; for example my grandma bought me fried fish still in its form (basically it looked like it was when it was alive, just fried with no eyes) and I was grossed out the whole time. While eating animals does seem normal and seem like it is how it should be, it does'nt mean we should take advantage of us being more dominant. Before Africans were shipped to America they killed the animal and "spoke" to it thanking it before using it for food and other things (otherwise known as praying). Native Americans did something similar to this. If they can be greatful then we can too, and we should.
